Colleagues in the Education and Community Work fields and members of CASAT:

Casa Salvador Allende-Toronto (CASAT), an organization aiming to develop the cultural, educational, artistic and community needs aspects of the Chilean and Spanish-speaking population of Toronto, has embarked upon a project sponsored by the Toronto Community Housing (Social Investment Fund) to develop a project to provide support to students and parents of our community to solve the abysmal problem of a 39.5% drop-out rate amongst Spanish-speaking high school students in Toronto and considering a priority those who are tenants of the TCH.

Our project, the "Educational Support Project for Spanish-speaking Students" commenced in September 2010 and to date we have been able to offer 8 workshops for students and parents, including a Summer Camp in collaboration with the Toronto District School Board, all of them aiming a creating awareness about the educational needs, navigating and understanding the school system and, obviously, trying to ameliorate the drop-out situation affecting our community.

Since the school year is ending these days, CASAT would like to complete the first year of this valuable project ending at the end of August, 2011, by offering during the summer a workshop to those students who have already drop-out or about to do it. We are aware that the system offers alternatives to those willing to reinsert themselves to finish their high school diploma and thus having future opportunities to further their education and having access to the employment market.

Therefore, we are asking to our friends in the TDSB and TCDSB, principal and vice-principals, and especially the guidance teachers and colleagues doing support work in the field as SWIS and SEPT workers to help us contact or communicate with those Spanish-speaking students who are considered vulnerable by dropping-out or thinking about doing so. Likewise, we request from them to send this communication to those colleagues they deem to be considered interested in the matter. In view of confidentiality policies those interested in participating and obtaining information in a well prepared seminar to be offered during the summer, at a convenient time for everyone, can contact us at education@casasalvadorallende.com or by calling or leaving a message at 416.738.6350 or 416.456.6603.

Again, we would appreciate if our colleagues can distribute this communication to other workers or educators in Toronto working with the Spanish-speaking communities. Your contribution to this noble task will undoubtedly be a step forward in diminishing a negative situation which needs to be remediated.
